Mount Sneffels Wilderness

Mount Sneffels Wilderness is a 16,495-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Colorado, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape here is alpine and subalpine terrain suited to foot travel and backcountry exploration in its most primitive form.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the wilderness. Visitors come for solitude and untrammeled high-country terrain. No roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted—the area is reserved for non-motorized backcountry use only.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and traveling on foot. Seasonal snow and weather dictate when the wilderness is safely passable; summer and early fall offer the most reliable conditions. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles and respect the wilderness regulations that protect this federally designated area from development and overuse.
