Mount Massive Wilderness

Mount Massive Wilderness is a 23,939-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Colorado managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where motors, mechanized travel, and roads are prohibited—the landscape remains undeveloped and non-motorized throughout.

The area offers hiking and backpacking for visitors seeking solitude and a genuine wilderness experience. Access is on foot only, and all travel must follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the landscape. There are no facilities, no maintained roads into the wilderness, and no modern infrastructure within its boundaries.

Visit during the warmer months when snow has melted and trails are passable. Summer and early fall are the primary season for backcountry use. Come prepared for self-sufficient travel: carry water, camp responsibly, pack out all waste, and respect the wilderness character that defines the area.
