Mount Evans Wilderness

Mount Evans Wilderness spans nearly 73,500 acres across Colorado's high country under Forest Service management and federal Wilderness protection. The landscape is alpine and subalpine terrain—steep, rocky, and exposed at elevation—offering backcountry hiking and backpacking in genuine primitive conditions. Access is foot-traffic only: no roads, motors, or mechanized travel of any kind penetrate the Wilderness boundary. You'll encounter solitude and untracked terrain, with the physical and mental challenge that comes with self-reliance in exposed alpine country.

Visitation follows Colorado's high-country season. Late spring through early fall (roughly May through September) offers passable conditions, with peak months in summer when snow has cleared and weather is most stable. Winter and early spring bring avalanche hazard, snow closure, and extreme exposure. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace discipline: pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces away from water, and travel quietly to preserve the Wilderness character. This is not a place for casual day-hikers or those unprepared for alpine weather and terrain.
