Middle Santiam Wilderness

Middle Santiam Wilderness is an 8,758-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry terrain where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and developed infrastructure are prohibited. Visitors come here to experience solitude and untrammeled landscape on foot.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary pursuits in this non-motorized wilderness. The area offers opportunities for backcountry exploration and camping in a setting free from roads and motor vehicles. To protect the wilderness character and resources, all visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel lightly on the land.

Access and seasonal conditions depend on weather and snow melt; spring and early summer typically see heavy snowpack, while fall offers stable conditions. Plan accordingly and check current conditions with the managing Forest Service office before heading out, as Wilderness rules mean no maintained facilities or marked infrastructure—navigation and self-sufficiency are essential.
