Mecca Hills Wilderness Area

Mecca Hills Wilderness Area is a 30,550-acre federally protected wilderness in California managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The landscape is rugged and remote, offering backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive setting where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the landscape is off-limits to roads, motorized vehicles, and mechanized travel of any kind. Visitors must travel on foot, and all use follows Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and minimize your footprint. There are no developed facilities, maintained trails, or services within the boundary.

Access is typically via trailheads on the perimeter; plan accordingly and bring all water and supplies you'll need. Desert conditions prevail, making spring and fall the most comfortable seasons. Summer heat is extreme, and winter can bring unpredictable weather. This is backcountry travel for experienced hikers and backpackers comfortable with navigation, self-rescue, and wilderness camping.
