Mazatzal Wilderness

Mazatzal Wilderness is a 250,809-acre federally protected wilderness area in Arizona managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted—a place defined by solitude and self-reliance. Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the landscape, and visitors must adhere to Leave No Trace principles to preserve the wilderness character. Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and entering on foot; there are no facilities or maintained infrastructure within the wilderness boundary. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable hiking conditions, while summer heat can be intense and winter snow may limit access to higher elevations. Plan to be entirely self-sufficient: carry all water, food, and gear you'll need, and camp only in dispersed sites following wilderness regulations.
