Lower White River Wilderness Area

Lower White River Wilderness Area is a 1,124-acre federally protected wilderness in Oregon, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This primitive backcountry offers hiking and backpacking opportunities in a non-motorized setting where solitude and natural character define the experience.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the landscape remains undeveloped—no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors must travel on foot, and all use follows Leave No Trace principles. Access is by trail only, and the rules are strict: pack out everything you pack in, camp below timberline where designated, and keep groups small to preserve the wilderness character.

Season your visit for late spring through early fall when snow clears and trails are passable. Winter conditions and spring runoff can make travel hazardous. Come prepared for weather, carry a map, and expect genuine backcountry conditions—this is not a developed recreation area.
