Lizard Head Wilderness

Lizard Head Wilderness is a 41,587-acre federally protected wilderness area in Colorado managed by the Forest Service. This is primitive backcountry where motors, mechanical travel, and roads are prohibited—true wilderness terrain for those seeking solitude and self-reliance.

The area offers hiking and backpacking across a landscape defined by steep terrain and high elevation. This is not a place for casual strolls; visitors should expect challenging backcountry conditions and come prepared for alpine weather and remote conditions. Camping is allowed throughout the wilderness, but you must practice Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, and use established sites or disperse camping responsibly.

Access requires driving to trailheads on surrounding roads, then leaving all motors and wheeled travel behind. The hiking season is short—roughly late spring through early fall—with winter making most routes inaccessible. There are no facilities, maintained shelters, or services inside the wilderness. This is a destination for experienced backcountry travelers who understand wilderness rules and respect the land's primitive character.
