Little Picacho Wilderness Area

Little Picacho Wilderness Area spans nearly 40,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive desert wilderness where motors, mechanized travel, and developed infrastructure have no place—only foot traffic and pack animals are permitted. Visitors come here for backcountry hiking and backpacking in solitude, far from roads and the conveniences of civilization.

The wilderness operates under strict Leave No Trace principles. You'll find no maintained trails, no facilities, and no marked routes. Water, shade, and reliable resupply are scarce, so preparation and self-sufficiency are non-negotiable. Access is typically from trailheads on adjacent public lands; always check current conditions and BLM regulations before heading out. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions for travel in this remote desert terrain.
