About Leaf Wilderness

Leaf Wilderness is a 993-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in Mississippi, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive setting where solitude and non-motorized travel are the defining features.

As a protected Wilderness Area, Leaf operates under strict rules: no motorized vehicles, no mechanized equipment, and no road development. Visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel on foot or horseback only. This is genuine backcountry, not a developed recreation area.

Access and seasonal conditions depend on weather and trail maintenance by the Forest Service. Mississippi's humid subtropical climate means summer heat and humidity are intense, while winter can bring wet conditions. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable hiking conditions. Check with the Forest Service office managing the area for current trail status, access points, and any closures before you go.
