Lassen Volcanic Wilderness Area

Lassen Volcanic Wilderness Area spans nearly 79,000 acres of protected backcountry in California, offering genuine solitude and primitive hiking and backpacking across volcanic terrain. This is federally designated Wilderness—no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. All access is non-motorized: foot travel only, with pack animals allowed under Wilderness rules.

The landscape reflects volcanic geology and high-elevation character typical of the region. Visitors come primarily to backpack and hike deep into roadless country, away from developed facilities. The Wilderness enforces strict Leave No Trace standards; campsites must be established well away from water sources, and all waste must be packed out. Fires are restricted or prohibited—check current regulations before you go.

Access is seasonal, limited by snow at elevation. Summer and early fall are the primary windows for travel; spring and late fall are passable but challenging. Winter renders most routes impassable. No facilities or services exist within the Wilderness; all supplies must be carried in. This is a true backcountry experience suited to experienced hikers and backpackers prepared for self-sufficiency and Leave No Trace discipline.
