Koyukuk Wilderness Area

Koyukuk Wilderness Area protects nearly 380,000 acres of remote Alaskan backcountry managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. This is true wilderness—no roads, no motorized travel, no mechanized equipment. The landscape is primitive and undeveloped, offering solitude and self-reliant backcountry exploration for those prepared for genuine remoteness.

Visitors come here to hike and backpack through untamed terrain, with the understanding that you are entirely responsible for navigation, safety, and logistics. There are no maintained trails or developed facilities. This is Leave No Trace country: pack out everything you bring in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and travel lightly across the land.

Access is challenging and typically requires flying in or a long approach. The brief Alaska summer—roughly June through September—is the primary window for wilderness travel. Winter conditions are severe and the area becomes impassable for most visitors. Come prepared for unpredictable weather, river crossings, and complete self-sufficiency. This is a destination for experienced backcountry travelers who seek true wilderness solitude.
