Kobuk Valley Wilderness Area

Kobuk Valley Wilderness Area encompasses 182,607 acres of remote Alaskan backcountry managed by the National Park Service as a federally designated Wilderness. This is primitive country with no roads, no motorized access, and no mechanized travel of any kind—true non-motorized wilderness where you'll find solitude and undeveloped landscape.

Visiting means backpacking and hiking on foot, with camping as your base. You are responsible for Leave No Trace ethics: pack out everything you pack in, camp lightly, and respect the land's pristine character. Access is challenging and requires planning; there are no maintained trailheads or infrastructure in the traditional sense. The remoteness and lack of services demand self-sufficiency and backcountry competence.

Season matters sharply in the Arctic. Summer and early fall (roughly June through September) offer the best window for travel, when temperatures are manageable and daylight is abundant. Winter brings extreme cold and darkness; spring and late fall are transitional and unpredictable. Expect to be truly isolated—help is far away, and weather can change rapidly.
