Kisatchie Hills Wilderness

Kisatchie Hills Wilderness is an 8,701-acre federally protected wilderness area in Louisiana, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive, non-motorized setting where solitude and escape from development are central to the experience.

The wilderness prohibits roads, motors, and mechanized travel of any kind. Visitors must travel on foot and camp using Leave No Trace principles—packing out all waste, camping on durable surfaces away from water sources, and keeping the land undisturbed for those who follow. This is true wilderness: no facilities, no maintained infrastructure, and no shortcuts. Access is typically by trail from adjacent national forest lands, and advance planning is essential.

Visit during spring through early fall when weather is most favorable for backcountry travel. Summer heat and humidity are significant, and winter conditions can make trails wet and muddy. Come prepared for Louisiana's climate, insects, and water sources along the route, and remember that wilderness designation means you are responsible for navigation, safety, and self-sufficiency once you enter.
