Kelso Dunes Wilderness Area

Kelso Dunes Wilderness Area spans over 154,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is true wilderness—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. Visitors come for hiking and backpacking across a remote, primitive landscape where solitude and self-reliance are central to the experience.

The wilderness demands Leave No Trace ethics and careful planning. There are no developed facilities, maintained trails, or support services within the area. Access is on foot only, and you'll navigate cross-country or use minimal, unmarked routes. Water is scarce and must be found or carried.
