Karta River Wilderness

Karta River Wilderness is a 39,924-acre federally protected wilderness area in southeast Alaska, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is remote backcountry characterized by the natural features of the coastal temperate environment. Access is primitive—there are no roads or motorized access into the area, and all travel must be non-motorized and foot-powered.

Backpacking and hiking are the primary ways to experience this wilderness. Visitors should expect true backcountry conditions: self-sufficiency is essential, and all use follows Leave No Trace principles. The wilderness designation means mechanized travel of any kind is prohibited. Summer offers the most practical window for travel, though Alaska's backcountry weather can be unpredictable year-round. Plan accordingly for remote, rugged terrain and the reality of Alaska's short hiking season.
