Jedediah Smith Wilderness

Jedediah Smith Wilderness is a federally protected, non-motorized backcountry area spanning nearly 124,000 acres in Wyoming. It offers visitors a genuine wilderness experience where foot travel and human-powered recreation are the only options—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted. The landscape provides opportunities for hiking, backpacking, and the kind of solitude that comes with entering true backcountry terrain.

Visiting means committing to Leave No Trace principles and self-reliance. Access is trailhead-based only, and you'll be traveling on foot through primitive country with no maintained infrastructure. The wilderness designation is both the draw and the constraint: pristine conditions and genuine remoteness come with the requirement that visitors travel light, camp responsibly, and leave no trace of their passage. Water, weather, and navigation are your responsibility. The Forest Service manages the area under strict wilderness rules that preserve its non-motorized character.
