Inyo Mountains Wilderness Area

The Inyo Mountains Wilderness Area spans over 125,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive terrain reserved for non-motorized travel—no roads, motors, or mechanized equipment are permitted. Visitors come here to hike and backpack through remote, undeveloped landscape, seeking the solitude and self-reliance that wilderness travel demands.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and traveling on foot. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything you pack in, camp away from water sources, and travel lightly across the land. This is true backcountry—bring a map, reliable navigation, and the skills to move safely through terrain without maintained trails or services. Winter conditions can be severe and access difficult; spring through fall is the practical window for most visitors, with summer and early autumn offering the most stable conditions.
