Indian Mounds Wilderness

Indian Mounds Wilderness is a 12,224-acre federally protected wilderness area in Texas managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry where you'll encounter natural forest and open terrain typical of the region, offering a genuine escape into non-motorized country.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the wilderness. The area is designed for solitude and self-reliance—there are no roads, motors, or mechanized travel allowed. You'll be on foot, carrying what you need, with minimal development and no maintained infrastructure beyond basic trail access.

Visit with Leave No Trace principles in mind: pack out all waste, camp only in designated areas or dispersed sites where regulations allow, and respect the wilderness character that makes the place worth protecting. Access and seasonal conditions depend on local weather and trail conditions, so check with the Forest Service before heading out. This is genuine backcountry travel, not a day-hike destination.
