Horseshoe Bay Wilderness

Horseshoe Bay Wilderness is a 3,879-acre federally protected wilderness area in Michigan, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking in a primitive setting where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and maintained roads are prohibited. The area is open to non-motorized recreation only—foot traffic and pack animals are the means of travel.

Visitors should expect true wilderness conditions: self-sufficient travel, Leave No Trace practices, and full responsibility for route-finding and safety. There are no facilities, maintained trails, or services. Access is seasonal, with the best window in warmer months when snow is absent and trails are passable. Winter conditions can make backcountry travel hazardous. Plan ahead with maps, know wilderness regulations, and come prepared for isolation and self-reliance.
