Hells Canyon Wilderness

Hells Canyon Wilderness spans over 217,000 acres of remote backcountry in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service as a federally protected Wilderness Area. The landscape is rugged and primitive—no roads, motor vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. This is true backcountry: you'll travel on foot or horseback, camp in designated sites, and share the land with few others. The wilderness offers genuine solitude and the challenge of self-sufficiency.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the area. Expect a non-motorized, Leave No Trace environment where you pack in and pack out everything you bring. Water, weather, and distance are real constraints; plan carefully and come prepared. Access is from trailheads on the periphery; there are no interior roads. Season matters—spring and fall can bring difficult conditions, and winter access is severely limited. This is a place for experienced backcountry travelers who respect wilderness rules and understand the demands of remote terrain.
