Gunnison Gorge Wilderness Area protects nearly 18,000 acres of remote backcountry in Colorado managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This federally designated Wilderness offers primitive hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized landscape where solitude and self-reliance are the core experience. Visitors should expect no developed infrastructure, no roads, and no mechanized travel of any kind—the wilderness rules are absolute and enforced. Access is foot-traffic only, and all visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and respect the land's pristine character. Spring through fall offers the most practical visiting window, though snow and winter conditions can make travel hazardous from December through March.
