Gros Ventre Wilderness

Gros Ventre Wilderness is a 286,000-acre federally protected wilderness area in Wyoming, managed by the Forest Service. It offers true backcountry solitude across primitive landscapes accessible only on foot or horseback—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted within its boundaries.

The wilderness is primarily a destination for backpacking and hiking, drawing visitors seeking remote alpine and subalpine terrain away from developed areas. Camping is allowed throughout the wilderness, but all use must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and travel quietly to preserve the quiet character of the place.

Access to Gros Ventre is seasonal, with the best travel window during summer and early fall months when snow clears from higher elevations. Winter and spring conditions can render many routes impassable. Plan for a multi-day journey if you want to penetrate deep into the wilderness; day hikes are possible from trailheads, but the scale of the area rewards those willing to camp overnight. Water is available throughout, but purification is essential. Cell service does not exist here—self-sufficiency and route-finding skills are prerequisites.
