Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge.Wilderness Area

Great White Heron National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area protects 23 acres of remote backcountry in Florida, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a federally designated Wilderness. This is primitive, non-motorized country—no roads, motors, or mechanized travel allowed. Access is by paddle or foot only, and the landscape reflects the Keys' shallow-water and island ecology.

Visitors come here primarily for kayaking, wildlife viewing, and photography in a true wilderness setting. The refuge offers genuine solitude and a chance to experience Florida's natural backcountry without development or mechanical intrusion. All visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out everything brought in, camp only in designated areas where permitted, and respect wildlife and vegetation.

Access requires your own watercraft or an outfitted guide; there are no visitor facilities within the Wilderness itself. The Florida Keys' subtropical climate means summer brings heat and afternoon thunderstorms, while winter offers calmer conditions. Plan ahead, bring adequate water and supplies, and check current refuge regulations before you go—conditions and access policies can shift.
