Great Swamp Wilderness Area

Great Swamp Wilderness Area is a 3,611-acre federally protected Wilderness in New Jersey, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The landscape is a mix of wetland, forest, and open water—classic swamp terrain with limited upland relief. It is designated as true Wilderness, meaning no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted. Access is foot-traffic only, and the backcountry rules are strict: Leave No Trace applies throughout.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary activities here, though the wetland character means wet feet and careful route-finding are the norm rather than exception. This is a place for solitude and intimate nature study rather than summit bagging or long vistas. Seasonal water levels and mosquito pressure make late spring through early fall the practical window for visits. Come prepared for primitive conditions, boggy footing, and the genuine isolation that Wilderness designation provides.
