Great Sand Dunes Wilderness Area

Great Sand Dunes Wilderness Area spans over 32,000 acres of protected backcountry in Colorado, managed by the National Park Service as a federally designated Wilderness. This is non-motorized country. No roads, vehicles, or mechanized travel are permitted—only hiking, backpacking, and human-powered movement. Water sources and established routes are limited, so preparation and self-sufficiency are essential.

Access is typically seasonal, with summer and early fall offering the most reliable conditions. Winter snow and cold can make travel difficult and hazardous.
