Great Bear Wilderness

Great Bear Wilderness is a 287,012-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Montana, managed by the Forest Service. It is a primitive backcountry landscape reserved for non-motorized travel and unroaded exploration. Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the area, offering visitors the opportunity to venture into remote terrain on foot with a pack. The wilderness enforces strict rules: no roads, no motorized vehicles, and no mechanized travel of any kind. This is genuine backcountry—solitude and self-reliance are part of the experience.

Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles and plan accordingly for seasonal conditions. Access is on foot only, and the season is relatively short; summer and early fall offer the most reliable window for travel. Winter closes much of the area to casual visitors. Plan ahead, carry what you need, and understand that help and resupply are far away.
