Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area

Gravel Island National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area is a 19-acre federally designated Wilderness on the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan. This small, primitive preserve protects island habitat and offers visitors a rare chance to experience undeveloped backcountry in a region where such areas are scarce.

Access to the island is by water only—there are no roads, motorized vessels, or mechanized travel permitted within the Wilderness. Visitors typically reach it by private boat or arranged water taxi from the mainland. Once there, hiking and exploration are the primary activities, with opportunities for solitude and wildlife observation in a natural, undisturbed setting. The refuge manages the area under strict Leave No Trace principles and federal Wilderness rules: pack out all waste, camp only in designated areas if permitted, and travel on foot.

Visit during the warmer months when lake conditions are safest for water access. Spring and fall shoulder seasons are possible but require careful attention to weather and water temperature. Winter access is extremely difficult and not recommended due to ice, cold, and isolation. Plan ahead: contact the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for current conditions, landing regulations, and any seasonal closures that may protect nesting birds or wildlife.
