Government Peak Wilderness Area

Government Peak Wilderness Area encompasses 6,321 acres of federally protected backcountry in Nevada, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is true wilderness—primitive and roadless, with no motorized travel, mechanical transport, or developed infrastructure. Visitors come here to hike and backpack in solitude, experiencing the untrammeled landscape on foot.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the land is governed by strict non-use rules. No motors, mountain bikes, or mechanized equipment are permitted; travel is by boot or pack animal only. Backcountry camping is allowed, but Leave No Trace principles are non-negotiable—pack out all waste, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and minimize your footprint. The isolation and primitive character are the point; expect no trails, no facilities, and no crowds.

Access is typically seasonal, with late spring through early fall offering the most favorable conditions. Winter weather and snow can make travel difficult or dangerous. Plan ahead, carry maps and a compass or GPS device, and be self-sufficient—water, shelter, and navigation are entirely your responsibility.
