About Gibraltar Mountain Wilderness Area

Gibraltar Mountain Wilderness Area is an 18,858-acre federally protected wilderness in Arizona managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive backcountry where motorized travel, mechanized equipment, and developed roads are prohibited—the defining character of all designated Wilderness. Visitors come here to hike and backpack in genuine solitude, away from the infrastructure and noise of managed recreation areas.

Access is foot-traffic only. Plan on self-sufficient backcountry travel with full Leave No Trace practices: pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, and respect the landscape's wild character. Spring and fall offer comfortable conditions; summer heat and winter cold require preparation and experience. This is a place for those seeking untrammeled backcountry, not maintained trails or services.
