Garden Of The Gods Wilderness

Garden of the Gods Wilderness is a 3,978-acre federally protected wilderness area in southern Illinois managed by the Forest Service. It offers primitive backcountry experience in a non-motorized setting where hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore the landscape. The wilderness provides opportunity for solitude and immersion in undeveloped terrain away from roads and mechanized travel.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the land operates under strict protection rules: no motorized vehicles, no mountain bikes or mechanized equipment, and no developed infrastructure. Visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles—pack out all waste, camp only in dispersed sites where permitted, and travel lightly across the land. Access requires hiking in from trailheads, and conditions vary seasonally; spring and fall offer moderate temperatures, while summer heat and winter cold can affect safety and comfort. Check with the Forest Service before visiting to confirm current access points, trail conditions, and any temporary closures.
