Funeral Mountains Wilderness Area

Funeral Mountains Wilderness Area spans nearly 28,000 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive desert wilderness where motorized travel, roads, and mechanized transport are prohibited—the landscape is yours only on foot or horseback, and solitude is the default condition.

The wilderness invites hiking and backpacking across remote terrain, with the primary appeal being isolation and the chance to move through undeveloped country far from crowds. Camping is allowed throughout the area under Leave No Trace principles: pack out all waste, camp away from water sources, use established fire rings sparingly if at all, and respect the fragile desert ecosystem.

Access is limited to trailheads on the wilderness perimeter; there are no internal roads or facilities. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable conditions, though summer is viable for those prepared for heat. Winter can bring snow and hazardous conditions depending on elevation. Come self-reliant with map, water, and supplies—this is not a maintained or heavily monitored area.
