Flat Tops Wilderness

Flat Tops Wilderness is a 231,062-acre federally protected wilderness area in Colorado managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is characterized by open plateaus, alpine terrain, and backcountry valleys that invite extended backpacking trips and remote exploration. This is non-motorized, primitive backcountry where solitude and self-reliance define the experience.

Recreation here centers on hiking and backpacking across roadless terrain. The wilderness welcomes those seeking genuine backcountry immersion—multi-day treks through undeveloped country where mechanized travel, mountain bikes, and motors are prohibited. Horseback travel is permitted in some areas. Wildlife viewing and photography are natural byproducts of time spent in remote country.

Access requires leaving your vehicle behind and traveling on foot or horseback. There are no roads or developed infrastructure within the wilderness boundary. Summer and early fall offer the most reliable conditions; snow and cold make winter travel hazardous and impassable for most visitors. Spring and shoulder seasons can be muddy and unpredictable. Plan for true wilderness self-sufficiency—carry what you need, follow Leave No Trace principles, and expect isolation as a feature, not a bug.
