Endicott River Wilderness

Endicott River Wilderness is a 98,400-acre federally designated Wilderness Area in Alaska, managed by the Forest Service. The area encompasses remote backcountry terrain suited for those seeking genuine solitude and primitive recreation away from developed infrastructure.

Backpacking and hiking are the primary ways to experience this wilderness. There are no roads, motorized vehicles, or mechanized travel permitted—the landscape remains accessible only on foot. Visitors must be entirely self-sufficient and prepared for unpredictable weather and rugged conditions typical of Southeast Alaska.

Wilderness travel here means strict adherence to Leave No Trace principles. Pack out everything you pack in, camp away from water sources, and minimize your footprint on the land. Access typically requires water or air transport from nearby communities. The short Alaska summer—roughly June through September—offers the most favorable window for travel, though shoulder months may present challenges. Winter conditions make the wilderness effectively inaccessible for most visitors.
