Ellicott Rock Wilderness

Ellicott Rock Wilderness is an 8,300-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in South Carolina, managed by the Forest Service. The area offers primitive backcountry experience in a non-motorized setting where hikers and backpackers can find genuine solitude away from developed infrastructure.

Visitors should expect true wilderness conditions: no roads, no motors, and no mechanized travel of any kind are permitted. This is backcountry on foot only. The Wilderness is governed by Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel lightly on the land. Access requires a short drive to trailheads, from which you enter on foot into undeveloped terrain.

The area is most accessible during spring through fall months, when weather supports backpacking and day hiking. Winter conditions can present hazards. Plan for self-sufficiency once you cross the wilderness boundary; there are no services, maintained facilities, or ranger stations within the protected area itself.
