East Potrillo Mountains Wilderness Area

The East Potrillo Mountains Wilderness Area spans 13,333 acres of federally protected backcountry in southern New Mexico, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive, non-motorized terrain where hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore the landscape and experience solitude in the remote high desert.

Visiting means following strict wilderness rules: no roads, no motors, no mechanized travel of any kind. All visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel lightly on the land. Access is foot-traffic only, which keeps the area quiet and undeveloped by design. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable hiking conditions in this region; summer heat is intense, and winter can bring snow and cold that complicate travel.
