Dolly Sods Wilderness

Dolly Sods Wilderness spans nearly 18,000 acres of remote backcountry in West Virginia, managed by the Forest Service as a federally protected Wilderness Area. This is primitive country where no roads, motors, or mechanized travel are permitted—you move through it on foot or horseback only, and the landscape rewards those willing to walk.

The wilderness offers genuine solitude and backcountry hiking and backpacking for those prepared to navigate without maintained trails in places. Camping is allowed throughout the area under Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp on durable surfaces away from water sources, and leave no trace of your presence. The reality of visiting is that this is untrammeled land—navigation requires map and compass skills, weather can change rapidly, and self-sufficiency is essential.

Access is by foot from trailheads outside the wilderness boundary; there are no roads or facilities within. Spring through fall offers the most reliable weather and longest daylight, though snow and cold make winter travel hazardous. Summer is peak season, but expect weather to be variable. Come prepared for true wilderness conditions and ready to follow the strict non-motorized, non-mechanized ethic that defines all federally designated Wilderness.
