About Docs Pass Wilderness Area
Docs Pass Wilderness Area spans 17,208 acres of primitive backcountry in Utah, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a federally protected Wilderness. The area offers a non-motorized landscape where hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience the terrain and find genuine solitude far from developed access.
Visiting means embracing true wilderness conditions: no roads penetrate the area, motorized travel is prohibited, and mechanized equipment like mountain bikes are not permitted. This is Leave No Trace country—pack out everything you pack in, camp away from water sources, and travel lightly on the land. Access typically requires a substantial hike from the nearest trailhead, and route-finding may involve cross-country travel rather than maintained paths.
Season your visit for late spring through early fall when snow melt has cleared and temperatures are moderate. Winter and early spring can bring snow and difficult conditions. Come prepared for isolation: bring maps, adequate water, and self-sufficiency gear. The wilderness character—the absence of roads and motors—is precisely what makes it worth the effort.
