About Devil's Staircase Wilderness Area
Devil's Staircase Wilderness Area is a small, federally protected wilderness in Oregon managed by the Bureau of Land Management. As a designated Wilderness Area, it preserves primitive backcountry where motors, mechanized travel, and developed infrastructure are prohibited. Visitors come here to experience solitude and untrammeled landscape on foot, whether for day hikes or backpacking trips that demand self-reliance and Leave No Trace ethics.
Access is on foot only—no roads penetrate the area, and all travel must be non-motorized. The wilderness character means you'll encounter rugged terrain without maintained facilities or services. Plan your visit during the warmer months when conditions permit safe passage, and come prepared for remote, primitive conditions. Respect the wilderness rules: pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and travel lightly on the land.
