About Devils Staircase Wilderness

Devils Staircase Wilderness is a 30,520-acre federally protected wilderness area in Oregon, managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry terrain suited to hiking and backpacking in a non-motorized setting where solitude and primitive conditions are the defining character.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the landscape is roadless and free from mechanized travel. Visitors should expect no maintained infrastructure and must follow Leave No Trace principles throughout their stay. Access requires foot travel only—no motors, vehicles, or mountain bikes are permitted.

Season and access depend on weather and snow melt in the region. Summer and early fall typically offer the most reliable conditions for backcountry travel. Plan ahead, check with the Forest Service for current conditions, and come prepared for remote, self-sufficient travel in primitive country.
