Devils Backbone Wilderness

Devils Backbone Wilderness is a 6,691-acre federally protected wilderness area in Missouri, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape offers primitive backcountry terrain suited to hikers and backpackers seeking solitude and untracked exploration away from roads and development.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the terrain is off-limits to motorized travel, mechanical equipment, and mountain bikes. All visitors must travel on foot and practice Leave No Trace principles—pack out what you pack in, camp on durable surfaces, and respect the land's wild character. There are no maintained roads or facilities within the wilderness boundary; access requires hiking from trailheads outside the designated area.

Visit during spring through fall for the most reliable conditions. Summer offers the longest daylight and warmest weather, though spring and autumn bring cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Winter weather can be challenging and may limit access. Come prepared for backcountry self-sufficiency: carry maps, water, shelter, and be ready to navigate without marked trails or services.
