Desolation Wilderness is a 64,045-acre federally protected wilderness area in California managed by the Forest Service. It offers primitive backcountry terrain suited to hiking, backpacking, and those seeking genuine solitude away from roads and motors.

As a designated Wilderness Area, the landscape is managed under strict non-motorized standards. No vehicles, mechanized equipment, or motors are permitted—only foot and pack-animal travel. This means you'll encounter trails, not roads, and the absence of development is intentional and absolute.

Visit with Leave No Trace principles in mind. Camp responsibly, pack out all waste, and respect the wilderness designation that keeps this place primitive. Access is typically by foot or horse from trailheads on the perimeter. Snow and high elevation mean season is limited; plan for late spring through early fall conditions.
