Dead Mountains Wilderness Area

Dead Mountains Wilderness Area encompasses 54,464 acres of federally protected backcountry in California, managed by the Bureau of Land Management. This is primitive terrain where motors, roads, and mechanized travel are prohibited—only foot and pack-animal travel is permitted. Visitors come here for backcountry hiking and backpacking in a landscape shaped by remote desert and mountain topography, where true solitude and self-reliance are core to the experience.

Access is on foot only. There are no developed trailheads or facilities; entry requires planning and navigation skills. As a designated Wilderness Area, all visitors must follow Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp below timberline where permitted, use established campsites or dispersed sites far from water sources, and respect the non-motorized character of the land. Spring and fall typically offer the most comfortable hiking conditions in this region. Water sources are limited and unreliable, making thorough trip planning essential. Solitude is the defining feature—expect to encounter few if any other visitors once you enter the backcountry.
