Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness Area

Cottonwood Canyon Wilderness Area spans 11,664 acres of primitive backcountry in Utah, managed by the Bureau of Land Management as a federally designated Wilderness. The landscape offers canyon country terrain typical of the region's slickrock and red-rock formations, with opportunities for exploration on foot away from development and motorized use.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to experience this wilderness. Visitors come for solitude and the chance to travel through undeveloped terrain without roads, vehicles, or mechanized equipment. Because it is federally protected wilderness, all travel must be non-motorized and human-powered—foot traffic only.

Wilderness designation means strict adherence to Leave No Trace principles. Camp away from water sources, pack out all waste, and minimize your footprint. Access points and trailhead logistics should be confirmed with the BLM before your visit, as wilderness areas have limited development and few formal facilities. Spring and fall offer moderate temperatures; summer heat can be intense in canyon country, and winter snow may limit accessibility at higher elevations.
