Collegiate Peaks Wilderness

Collegiate Peaks Wilderness spans 166,227 acres of federally protected backcountry in Colorado, managed by the Forest Service as designated Wilderness. The area is closed to motorized travel, mechanized transport, and mountain bikes—all use is non-motorized and foot-powered. This is genuine alpine backcountry: expect high elevation terrain, rugged topography, and genuine solitude away from developed infrastructure.

Backpacking and hiking are the primary ways to experience the wilderness. Access is by foot only, and visitors must be prepared for self-sufficiency, variable weather, and the physical demands of alpine terrain. The season runs roughly from late spring through early fall, with summer offering the most reliable conditions and longest daylight for travel.

Wilderness rules are strict and non-negotiable: no roads, no motors, no mountain bikes, and Leave No Trace principles apply absolutely. Camp only in designated or durable sites, pack out all waste, and travel light. Water and weather can change rapidly at elevation. This is a place for experienced backcountry users who understand wilderness travel and respect its fragility.
