Chumash Wilderness

Chumash Wilderness is a 37,794-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in California managed by the Forest Service. It offers backcountry hiking and backpacking through primitive terrain where motorized travel and mechanized equipment are prohibited. Visitors come here for solitude and untracked exploration in a genuine wilderness setting.

Access is on foot only—no roads penetrate the area, and all travel must be non-motorized. Standard Wilderness regulations apply: pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and follow Leave No Trace principles. The area's remote character means self-sufficiency is essential; plan water sources, weather changes, and navigation carefully. Check with the managing Forest Service office for current conditions, access points, and any seasonal closures before your visit.
