Chuckwalla Mountains Wilderness Area

Chuckwalla Mountains Wilderness Area is a 101,602-acre federally protected wilderness in California managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The landscape is primitive desert backcountry, open only to non-motorized travel on foot or horseback. Visitors will find rugged terrain and deep solitude—no roads, vehicles, or mechanized equipment are permitted.

Hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore this wilderness. The area rewards those seeking backcountry immersion and the kind of isolation that comes with genuine desert wilderness. All visitors must practice Leave No Trace ethics: pack out everything you pack in, camp responsibly, and respect the fragile desert environment.

Access requires shuttle or high-clearance vehicle to trailheads on adjacent public land; no motorized use is allowed once inside the wilderness boundary. Spring and fall offer the most comfortable desert conditions. Summer heat is intense, and winter travel is possible but requires preparation for cold nights and limited water. This is a place for experienced backcountry travelers comfortable with self-sufficiency and minimal infrastructure.
