Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge.Wilderness Area

Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge Wilderness Area protects over 23,000 acres of primitive backcountry in coastal Florida, managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as federally designated Wilderness. The refuge encompasses a mix of wetlands, marshes, and coastal habitats characteristic of Florida's Gulf region, offering visitors a chance to experience undeveloped natural landscape far from roads and development.

Recreation here is non-motorized and backcountry in nature. Hiking, backpacking, camping, kayaking, and wildlife viewing are the primary ways to experience the Wilderness Area. Paddling through marsh and water corridors and exploring on foot are the primary methods of travel; there are no roads or mechanized access into the interior.

As a federally protected Wilderness, the area operates under strict rules: no motors, no mechanized travel, and no mountain bikes. Leave No Trace principles are essential—pack out everything you pack in, camp in designated areas where permitted, and travel lightly across the landscape. Access is limited to foot and non-motorized watercraft. Check with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for current conditions, access points, and any seasonal closures before visiting.
