Charles C. Deam Wilderness

Charles C. Deam Wilderness is a 12,538-acre federally protected Wilderness Area in Indiana, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is primitive backcountry, entirely off-limits to roads, motors, and mechanized travel of any kind. Access is non-motorized only—hiking and backpacking are the primary ways to explore the area.

Visitors should expect a genuine wilderness experience with strict Leave No Trace requirements. All travel must be on foot, and you'll need to be fully self-sufficient. There are no facilities, marked trails, or development within the designated boundary. This is a place for solitude and backcountry travel, not day-use convenience. Indiana's climate means spring and fall can offer pleasant conditions, though the area is accessible throughout the warmer months. Winter visits are possible but require appropriate preparation for cold and wet conditions.
