Castle Crags Wilderness

Castle Crags Wilderness is an 11,079-acre federally protected wilderness area in California, managed by the Forest Service. The landscape is rugged and primitive backcountry, characterized by dramatic terrain that draws hikers and backpackers seeking genuine solitude and untrammeled backcountry experience.

As a designated Wilderness Area, Castle Crags operates under strict non-motorized, non-mechanized travel rules. No roads, motors, or mountain bikes are permitted—travel is on foot or horseback only. All visitors must practice Leave No Trace principles: pack out what you pack in, camp below tree line where permitted, use established sites when possible, and minimize impact on this protected landscape.

Access to the wilderness requires leaving vehicles behind and entering on foot. The area is most accessible during warmer months when snow clears from higher elevations. Spring and early summer can bring wet conditions and lingering snow; late fall and winter are hazardous or impassable. Plan your visit for mid-summer through early fall for the most reliable conditions, but expect the alpine terrain to remain challenging and weather to change rapidly at any time of year.
